i now know what it is like to hit a brick wall
So, since i got the hook up on biking gear for my birthday, we decided to go riding yesterday. It rained like hell this weekend so most of the mountain biking trails are closed, so we decided to take the road bikes out. Right near our hours is a bunch of roads that are pretty un-trafficked & residential. Mind you, this is like my 2nd “real” road biking experience. We get about 30 minutes into and we hit this hill. and oh my god. is it a hill. steep. long. twisty & turny. just when you think it ends, it doesn’t. well, i’m in agony… and we really aren’t making much progress on the biks. this damn hill has defeated me & we must walk. to me, this is absolutely against the whole point of biking, imho. but what do i know. I also am beginning to think that road bikers are crazy. the gravity alone on these hills is enough to give most people i see decked out in road-biker-spandex a heart attack. We walk and walk and walk and FINALLY get to the top, start to bike again until i see another huge hill and i say “no way, i’m NOT walking up another hill” so we turn around.
And this is when i see the whole point of road biking in hilly areas… going down the hill that was so bad you had to walk up it. seriously, we were going down for what seemed like forever. i’m not sure where else you get that feeling from.
and then at the end of the monster-super-hill, there is a small bridge and then very steep but short hill. and i go from flying to barely moving in t-minus 1.5 seconds. I think I basically know what it feels like to hit a brick wall. the momentum loss, at very least.
so my ass hurts, like really bad… but i can’t wait to ride down the super hill again.
